I’m Not a Dude, I’m a Lady

I love the track “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves” by Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox.  Very much a toe tapper, right?  And what a message of empowerment!

I suspect that spelling “Doin’” incorrectly was Franklin’s idea.  Not because she can’t spell (but I can’t be certain about that), but because she realizes how folksy it is.  And that it gave white people the opportunity to say “Doin’” with a straight face.

But watching it now, I wonder if Annie Lennox didn’t have an ulterior motive.  Let’s be honest, in the mid-80′s Lennox was looking a littl dude-esque.  What better way to make it known that you’re all lady than creating an anthem for lady awesomeness?

And throw in the “Take No Shit, I Am Woman, I Am Big, I Will Cut You” Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and BAM, you’re officially a sister.

Way to go Lennox!  Not only are you creative, but super crafty!
